|
This Society has been active since 1791 when the noblemen and enlightened upper middle classes of Chiavari joined to form an Association. Being aware of all the aspects of life in this town they undertook to increase the culture, the crafts, agriculture and professional qualifications of this area. Its promoter was Marquis Stefano Rivarola, born in Chiavari, and formerly Ambassador of the Republic of Genoa at St. Petersburg at the Court of Catherine the Great of Russia. After being active for two centuries the Società Economica is still in full activity with its museums, its library, its painting exhibition, its halls kept for conferences and important events. In collaboration with Institutions and Universities, it aids the creation, is the driving force of the Chiavari cultural, professional and artistic influence. Even in its history we can find testimony of its efforts in promoting creative activities; for example in 1793 it succeeded in bringing about the First Industrial Exhibition in Europe. It has always been the promoter of numerous cultural initiatives of multiple contexts. For the latest event in Genoa namely: “The 2004 European Capital of Culture”, the Società Economica is promoting numerous activities to show the assets of the whole of the western Ligurian Province. The Società Economica has created the Institution called “Observatory of Urban Occurrences”. The Presidency examines requests of membership only by means of an introduction forwarded by two of its present members. This Society supports itself with donations and bequests in coherence to its aims.
